Cinemas Coming Soon
2018 delivered huge hits with movies across the globe. Marvel had the highest grossing film domestically with Black Panther, and led the global box office with the release of Avengers: Infinity War but, 2019 seems to be delivering its own punch to cinema.
January introduced us to the final movie of the M. Night Shyamalan trilogy with Glass, the movie kicked off the weekend with a 19 million dollar box office weekend and is on pace to hit 100 million dollars when all is said and done.
February kicks off with movies such as The Lego Movie 2: the second part, How to Train Your Dragon 3, and Prodigy. The Lego Movie 2 is the second of its kind behind The Lego Movie and The Lego Batman Movie. It is expected to be a blockbuster hit, as were its first two movies. How to Train Your Dragon 3 is the final movie of the Dreamworks trilogy. The final projected blockbuster hit of February is the horror movie Prodigy, which is about a mother and a young boy who is seen as a genius but seems to have dark thoughts and plans that the mother is very concerned about.
Sophomore Christine Alexander stated that, “The Prodigy because it seems very interesting with a hint of terrifying.”
Alexander wasn’t the only one looking forward to watching Prodigy, as freshman Devin Albright also had interest in the movie stating, “The Prodigy because I love horror movies.”
The blockbusters continue into March with only two movies that may be a box office hit: Captain Marvel and Dumbo. Captain Marvel is the first MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) movie with a female hero as the lead, the movie is set back almost 30 years in 1990 with stars such as Samuel L. Jackson and Brie Larson. Dumbo, a CGI remake of the classic from 1941, is about an elephant who has freakishly large ears that help the animal fly.
April also has two movies with great potential, leading the charge will be the DCEU (DC comics extended universe) movie, Shazam, a movie about a young boy who takes on the powers of the hero Shazam. Shazam is an acronym for his abilities with S standing for the wisdom of Solomon, H – for the strength of Hercules A – for the stamina of Atlas, Z – for the power of Zeus (which enhances all Marvel’s other physical abilities and allows for interdimensional travel), A – for the courage of Achilles (which would include invulnerability from ancient mythology), M – for the speed of Mercury (and, by extension, the power to fly). The final movie is Avengers: Endgame. The fourth installment of the Avengers movie is arguably the most anticipated movie of 2019 and of all MCU movies. It follows the events of Avengers: Infinity war in which Thanos has wiped out half the population across the entire universe and lives peacefully in a far away planet. The remaining Avengers are left in disarray as Tony Stark is stranded in space with limited supplies, Captain America, Thor, Rocket, and Black Widow are left on Earth, struggling to make up a plan to avenge their friends. Marvel studios plans to break the box office record after Avengers: Infinity War hit $1 billion dollars in sales and became the fourth top grossing movie of all time.
“I look forward to seeing Shazam because he is one of the more unknown superheros and my favorite overall personality-wise” said senior, Kyle Inderhees.
These movies are only the tip of the iceberg for 2019 but they start the year off on the right note after what was a record breaking year in 2018. So go out, grab some friends or your significant other and enjoy all the movies you can at a local theater such as Northgate Cinemax in Colerain or Cobb Liberty Luxury theaters located at Liberty Mall.
