Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes celebrates their Super Bowl win with his teammates and coaches while hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.

The Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs played one another in Super Bowl 57 in Glendale, Arizona, on February 12, 2023 and had one of the closest games all season. For many fans the game was stressful, but entertaining, with a lot of big, exciting plays. There was also a lot of history made in this final game of the National Football League 2022-2023 season.

First off, the road to this big game was a wild one for both teams. The Eagles started off very strong this season with an 8-0 record and going 14-3 overall. Despite their record, the concern was for their star quarterback Jalen Hurts. Hurts injured his throwing shoulder and some feared he wouldn’t be as effective with his injury, however, they were wrong. Hurts led the Eagles past the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers to send them to Arizona. The Eagles did all this while never losing the lead in both games before the Super Bowl.

Then, there’s the unexpected Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs were expected not to win their division and, to some, not even make the playoffs this year. Obviously, they proved a lot of people wrong. They won their division by a landslide while going 14-3, secured the number one seed in the American Football Conference playoffs, and went to the Super Bowl. Just to add more doubts to the Chiefs, their quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a high ankle sprain during their win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Even with his injury, he played every game, including the rest of the game he was hurt in, and beat the Super Bowl favorite Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship game.

Sophomore Max Niehaus stated, “It was a great game with big plays and two great teams.”

Both the Eagles and Chiefs faced a great deal of adversity in their Super Bowl runs, but managed to make it to the top. With a tight score of 38-35, the Kansas City Chiefs shocked the world and came out on top of the National Football League.

Freshman Owen Frank’s favorite part of the game was the close score. Frank stated, “I like when there is a close game between two teams because it makes the game more interesting.”

Super Bowl 57 had several exciting plays during the game. Some of those plays included Eagles’ wide receiver A.J. Brown’s 45-yard touchdown, Chiefs’ linebacker Nick Bolton’s fumble return touchdown, and Eagles’ Hurts’s three rushing touchdowns.

Dameron stated, “I think big plays and touchdowns are key in important games like these and it’s cool to see them unfold.”

Part of the history made was between Eagles’ center Jason Kelce and Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce. They became the first brothers to ever play each other in the Super Bowl. This year’s Super Bowl also featured two black starting quarterbacks for the first time. For the first time in Super Bowl history head coaches from both teams faced their former teams. Andy Reid, the Chiefs’ head coach, used to be the head coach of the Eagles from 1999-2012 and Nick Sirianni, the head coach of the Eagles, was an assistant coach for the Chiefs from 2009-2012.

Super Bowl 57 featured exploding plays, adversities overcome, and history made. At the end of the day, the Chiefs came out on top and now fans are looking forward to the offseason. There will be more excitement and intense games coming in early September when the 2023-2024 NFL season officially begins. Whether this season was a little disappointing or if it was the best year yet, there’s always next year for your team to win.
