November, the month when the weather intensifies, the turkey population decreases, and…Christmas songs start?
Everyone tends to get into the Christmas spirit as the holiday approaches, but there often seems to be a lack of “Thanksgiving spirit.” Sure, people tend to make plans to celebrate Thanksgiving, but, most of the time these plans only revolve around the day itself. This is largely in contrast the multiple weeks of Christmas celebrations and activities.
RHS students and staff answered a poll on when they begin decorating for Christmas. Universally, all grades voted “After Thanksgiving” with 255 votes. Followed by 89 votes for “November 1st “, and lastly, 32 votes for “December 1st.”
When asked by Sophomore Presley Fritz whether she prefers Christmas or Thanksgiving, she answered, “I feel like Thanksgiving is just one day while Christmas is a whole month.” Fritz proves why many get into the Christmas spirit as early as the start of November.
In an interview with Sophomore Madelyn Reed and Sophomore Alianna Molter, they answered the question “When do you start decorating for Christmas?” Both girls responded “The start of November.” When asked why, they both stated that the Christmas spirit lasts longer than the Thanksgiving spirit. However, when asking Sophomore Ruby Beers the same question, she stated “I start decorating for Christmas right after Thanksgiving.”
When being asked to rate how important Thanksgiving is from one to ten. Reed responded with a five, Molter responded with a seven, and Beers responded with a four. They also all expressed that they believe the Christmas spirit outweighs the Thanksgiving spirit in November. When asked why, they all responded, “I see a lot of Christmas decorations everywhere.” Molter added, “My neighbor has already decorated their place for Christmas.”
Though it’s uncertain whether the turkey overpowers Santa or the jolly BIG FAT man devours him with one gulp, most RHS students certainly love the holidays.
