You may know about the ball dropping in New York city and New Year’s champagne, but what else can you do to celebrate the holiday? Here are five New Year’s traditions from around the world that you can participate in to have a luckier year.
1.Sauerkraut
Eating pork and sauerkraut on New Years is a German tradition that is said to bring you good fortune.
2. 12 Grapes
In Spain, the 12 grapes represent luck in each of the 12 months of the coming year. You should eat these grapes at midnight and if you can, finish them all in one minute.
3. Smashing Plates
In several countries including the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark, people smash plates for good luck. While that is something you can do, the second half is not. The rest of the tradition involves breaking these dishes on the doorsteps of people you appreciate.
4. Dropping Ice Cream
Dropping ice cream on the ground on New Years is thought to bring prosperity in Switzerland.
5. Hitting with Bread
One Irish tradition involves using a loaf of bread. Instead of eating this bread, you are supposed to hit doors and walls with the loaf to get rid of bad spirits and bring in good ones.
