The True Strength basketball game is an inspiring way to bring two communities together. This year, it will take place on Jan. 24, 2025. True Strength is an organization that promotes inclusivity for special education students.
This game differs from a traditional high school basketball game for various reasons. Ross High School DECA advisor Mrs. Miller stated, “The highlights of the night include our students being introduced alongside the Boys Varsity Basketball team, a special halftime competition, and a beautiful performance of the National Anthem by Mrs. Hudak’s ASL students.” The goal is to highlight special education students between the two schools involved.
The project manager of True Strength and RHS Senior Olivia Gillum commented on the process of making True Strength happen. Gillum said, “Planning the True Strength game involves several steps. First, it includes identifying goals while keeping our mission in mind. The second step is collaboration, during the entire process we have to work with school administrators, teachers, the special education department, the cheer team, the basketball team and coaches, community sponsors, and volunteers.”
The True Strength team is working hard to market the game and gather support through “promotion and community engagement. Once we design and sell custom True Strength shirts, we promote the event on social media and partner with local organizations like Headlines Sportswear. And the final step is the execration – the day of the game. Our True Strength team oversees the event to ensure everything runs smoothly and that the focus remains on celebrating the students,” Gillum added.
This event holds great significance for the community, but most importantly the special education students. It not only creates a special community for these students, but it also helps raise funds for special education programs. Mrs. Miller also said, “True Strength started at RHS as a vision from compassionate student leaders and has since evolved into a national foundation. We’re excited to see this year’s game continue spreading the powerful message of True Strength.” Be sure to come and support all students involved.
