All over the media, people have been raving about the new personalized messages their Starbucks baristas have been leaving on their orders. Customers are wondering what has gotten into Starbucks employees, and baristas have confessed that the cup writing is part of a new policy instated by Starbucks’ CEO Brian Niccol.
Niccol’s policy is an artful attempt to bring back some soul to the company, and they hope that the short but sweet messages can help make someone’s day a little brighter. Some cups include cute messages such as “have a good day” or “good morning”, while others include fun jokes and comments.
In addition to the kind messages being spread, this new policy will also gift great profits to the company Sharpie. Niccol explained that the Starbucks company will need to purchase around 20,000 Sharpies to ensure that the baristas have the resources required to fulfill the policy.
Although customers are excited by this new development, a decent number of Starbucks employees have shared their complaints about the policy. Many feel that the added action of writing on the cups is slowing down their work pace. Some even say their work ethic is diminishing, and have admitted they do not take the time to write on cups when they’re slammed or in a rush.
Some baristas explain that the actions of corporate affect the baristas the most, and corporate managers simply relish in the profits of the employees’ “extra work”.
Trying to push past the irritating addition to their job, some are making the most out of the policy by writing inside jokes with their coworkers, long quotes from movies or TikToks, or just drawing funny pictures and memes on the cups.
With the policy still in full effect, employees and customers are beginning to wonder if it will stick, or if the cup-writing will slowly fade out until baristas no longer do it anymore. Unfortunately, we will not be sure of this quandary until the time comes, but until then, we should enjoy these sweet messages while we have them.
